KalAgro is a Paris-based deeptech startup born from the vision of creating a future of sustainable farming. The name itself carries meaning, with Kal standing for “Future” and Agro for “Agriculture,” inspired from village Kalmegha where this journey began. Our mission is to tackle climate change and reduce agriculture’s dependence on polluting chemical fertilizers by developing a next-generation biofertilizer through synthetic biology and advanced bioengineering process.
Kalagro’s bacteria-based biofertilizer is designed to address the environmental challenges associated with synthetic fertilizers, which contribute significantly to nutrient pollution and greenhouse gas emissions. Traditional fertilizers are responsible for 78% of nutrient pollution in water bodies, leading to issues such as eutrophication, which affects 64% of U.S. estuaries. Moreover, the production of synthetic fertilizers accounts for approximately 1.2% of global CO2 emissions
Kalagro’s biofertilizer leverages beneficial microorganisms, particularly strains like Pseudomonas chlororaphis, which play a crucial role in regenerating soil health and enhancing plant resilience. This natural process not only improves soil fertility but also protects plants from pests and diseases by enhancing their immune responses.
